Project Pressure - Glacier Archive - A visual time capsule

Project Summary

Think of Project Pressure as a visual time capsule.

Project Pressure is a not-for-profit organisation set out to generate the world’s first Glacier Atlas consisting of hundreds of images of the world’s retreating glaciers from every continent on the planet and is done in collaboration with the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). In 2011 Project Pressure was recognised as an official contributor to the Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers.

Our principal goal is to document the world’s changing glaciers, and to record first-hand the environmental impact of climate change. No such archive exists or is currently being generated.

During the next decade many glaciers will retreat or disappear. Documenting glacier history pre-melt will provide future generations with a visual archive of the way the world was, and underscore the importance of preserving the balance of the world’s ecosystem.

These quotes illustrate the urgency.

In Uganda the glaciers of the Ruwenzori Mountains will be gone in 20251

In Tanzania the top of Kilimanjaro will be gone in 20182

If the current rate of warming persists, scientists predict the glaciers in Glacier National Park (Montana, USA) will be completely gone by the year 20203

The archive is open source and is available royalty-free to use for scientific, educational and all other
non-commercial purposes. Project Pressure is great example of how art and science can play a leading role in society as the catalysts in a cross-sector project.

The four main platforms are:

1) Touring Exhibition
2) Digital Archive
3) Glacier Atlas, a UNESCO endorsed book publication
4) MELT (Mass Engagement & Listing Technology)
